The Power of Community: Thank You to the Heroes Behind the Scenes

Written By: Mandie Gillmor
Because every detail, donation, and moment of kindness made this year unforgettable.
This year’s Autism Walk was more than just a gathering—it was a celebration of inclusion, hope, and the power of community. With a record-breaking turnout of nearly 1,400 participants, we witnessed the kind of support that doesn’t just show up—it shows up with heart.
While we’ve shared many thank-yous across our social media platforms, there are a few exceptional individuals, businesses, and partners who made a huge impact behind the scenes—without whom the walk would not have been the success that it was. We want to take this moment to express our deepest appreciation to these generous souls who quietly carried so much of the weight and joy of the day.
Guardians of Safety: Yuma Fire Department
Prepared, present, and part of our community.
The presence of the Yuma Fire Department gave our walkers peace of mind and a visible reminder that safety comes first. With a ladder truck, EMS coverage, and an off-road vehicle, they stood ready for anything. Special thanks to Battalion Chief William Unterseh for his coordination and to Station 1 A Crew for remaining on site throughout the event. They even treated kids to up-close looks at the truck and took photos, blending safety with engagement in the best way possible.

Partners in Protection: Yuma Police Department
A steady presence keeping spirits high and walkers safe.
From patrolling the walk path to helping transport volunteers and assisting walkers in distress, the Yuma Police Department once again proved to be an indispensable partner. Sgt. Pino and Officer Fernandez, along with a team of off-duty officers, ensured everyone felt safe, supported, and welcomed. Their static display booth also gave participants a chance to connect with those who serve and protect our city.
Fueling Our Volunteers: Carlos Urias & Miner’s Pest
A hundred burritos and a whole lot of heart.
Thanks to Carlos Urias, owner of Miner’s Pest, our volunteers and staff were treated to over 150 delicious burritos and salsa from Mr. Burro’s—an incredibly generous donation that nourished the hardworking crew powering the walk. Carlos didn’t stop there—he also showed up in person as a parking attendant team lead, prioritizing safety and coordination for all our guests. Thank you, Carlos, for feeding us and showing up in such a big way.
Essential Comforts: Justin Patane & Friday Night Munchies
When nature calls, kindness answers.
Behind every smooth event is a logistical lifesaver, and this year that was Justin Patane from Friday Night Munchies. Justin donated two porta-potties and a handwashing station—provided by Southwest Sanitation—which were set up conveniently near the event site. It may seem like a small detail, but for 1,400 attendees, this act of generosity made a huge difference. Justin, thank you for making comfort and cleanliness a priority!
Keeping It Clean & Cool: Republic Services
Trash, snacks, and generosity that goes the extra mile.
Republic Services showed up in more ways than one. From donating trash boxes and bags to keep our park and path pristine, to providing extra water bottles, sodas, and snacks for walkers and volunteers—your support touched every corner of our event. Thank you for your deep generosity and commitment to both community and sustainability. Your impact was felt all day long.
A Voice to Remember: Joe Teposte, Walk M/C
Keeping the energy high and the schedule tight—Joe delivered.
Joe Teposte was the energetic voice of our event. As our walk M/C, he kept the crowd energized and engaged while ensuring the day ran smoothly and on time. His natural charisma, unwavering enthusiasm, and magnetic presence gave the walk an unforgettable vibe that simply cannot be replicated. Joe, we are beyond grateful for you. Thank you for being such a powerful part of the experience.
Convenience & Care: Trevor Umphress
One golf cart, countless tasks made easier.
Trevor Umphress donated his golf cart for use during the event—and it turned out to be an absolute game-changer. From restocking water to transporting volunteers and supplies, to keeping eyes on safety along the walk path, this simple gesture created enormous convenience and added a layer of efficiency and support we couldn’t have done without. Trevor, thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Shining a Light: Local Media Coverage
Telling our story to inspire more hearts.
A special thank you to Ernesto Romero, News Director at KYMA, for coordinating our pre-event and day-of coverage. To Alex Ebrahimi and Joe Teposte of the Yuma Sun—your storytelling and support helped amplify our mission in ways that words can’t fully express. Media coverage like yours gives our cause a voice, extends our reach, and brings more families into the fold. We are truly grateful.
City Champions: City of Yuma & Mayor Nicholls
Support from start to finish—and beyond.
A heartfelt thank you to the City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department, whose behind-the-scenes support helped make this event possible. From securing permits and answering countless logistical questions, to helping us obtain overflow parking at the 1st Street and 4th Avenue city lot, their collaboration was critical. Special thanks to Selena Reyes, who served as our primary point of contact with patience, professionalism, and kindness every step of the way.
We also extend our sincere gratitude to Mayor Doug Nicholls for joining us at the event and issuing a proclamation declaring April as Autism Awareness Month in Yuma. His presence and words brought visibility and validation to our mission in a powerful way.
In Closing: Gratitude That Runs Deep
Because community isn’t just who shows up—it’s who shows up with heart.
To everyone listed here—and so many more who gave their time, resources, and hearts—thank you. This year’s Autism Walk will go down in history not just because of the numbers, but because of the spirit of generosity and compassion that ran through every detail. You were each a part of that, and we are endlessly thankful.
