YUMA, AZ – June 3, 2025— It’s not every day a middle school student leads a successful school-wide fundraiser, but that’s exactly what 8th grader Zayd Al Lou did. Wanting to support his community and raise awareness for a local cause, Zayd turned his idea into action and raised $2,170 for The Strong Beginnings Project in the process.

A Student-Led Effort From Start To Finish

Zayd, a student at Desert View Middle School, came up with the idea to host a Dress Down Day at his school. To make it happen, he had to write a proposal, gather student signatures, and present his plan to the principal.

I wanted to help out my community and bring awareness to the cause.”-Zayd Alou

Our school had done Dress Down Days before, and I saw how effective they were. I thought it would be a good idea to try again since a lot of students seemed interested.”

His hard work paid off. With approval from the school and participation from his classmates, the fundraiser was a success.

Community Support That Matters

The $2,170 raised will go toward the Strong Beginnings Project’s mission fund, which supports children with autism and other special needs by providing adaptive equipment, therapy scholarships, and other resources.

“This type of student-led fundraising means a lot to us,” said Berenice Diaz, President of the Board of Directors. “Not only is it inspiring, but it also reminds us that community support can come from all ages. Zayd’s effort will directly support local families in need.”

Peer-to-peer fundraisers like this one are especially impactful for smaller nonprofits. Donations raised through community-led efforts help build momentum toward larger fundraising milestones. As Strong Beginnings continues to grow its mission fund, the organization is preparing to open its first round of funding applications in partnership with its board.

Reflecting On The Impact

When asked how he felt after learning he raised $2,100, Zayd said, “Pretty good, excited, and also happy to have participated and contributed to the fundraiser.”

He added, “I learned that I can do hard things as long as I stay positive about it.”

Zayd’s advice for other kids who want to make a difference?
“Make sure you know what you’re doing and pay attention to how much work it will be. This experience was difficult but worth it.”

We couldn’t agree more. Thank you, Zayd, for believing in our mission and showing us what thoughtful leadership looks like in action.
