Removing Barriers, Empowering Families
Our History
The Strong Beginnings Project was founded on the belief that every child with autism and special needs deserves the resources and support to thrive. What started as a mission to bridge gaps in care has grown into a dedicated nonprofit with the goal of providing assistive devices, funding therapies, and fostering community connections. No family should have to navigate this journey alone, and we are here to help.
Driven by a commitment to advocacy and action, The Strong Beginnings Project continues to expand its reach, offering hope and tangible support to families in need.
With the help of our board members, donors, and community partners, we remain focused on breaking down barriers and creating opportunities—because every child deserves a Strong Beginning.

What is an AAC and Why Does It Matter for Children with Autism and Special Needs?
An Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device is a tool that helps individuals with speech or language impairments communicate more effectively. AACs can range from simple picture boards to advanced speech-generating devices, all designed to support children who struggle with verbal communication.
For children with autism and other special needs, AACs play a crucial role in enhancing communication, fostering independence, and improving social interactions. These devices empower children to express their needs, thoughts, and emotions, leading to a significant improvement in their quality of life.
However, the cost of AAC devices can be a barrier. High-quality devices and the necessary accessories can run into thousands of dollars, making them out of reach for many families without financial support. That’s where your donation comes in—it helps cover the cost of AAC devices, ensuring that more children have access to these life-changing tools.
By supporting families in need, we’re making it possible for children to communicate, connect, and thrive. Your donation matters because it helps bridge the gap between a child’s potential and their ability to express themselves.
What is an Adaptive Car Seat for Children with Autism and Special Needs?
An adaptive car seat is specially designed to provide enhanced safety, comfort, and support for children with special needs, including those with autism. These seats offer adjustable features to accommodate a child’s unique physical and behavioral needs, ensuring proper positioning and security during travel. Unlike standard car seats, adaptive car seats can include additional harness systems, supportive padding, and special straps to prevent the child from slipping or getting out of the seat during transit.
For children with autism, an adaptive car seat can reduce anxiety during car rides and provide a more comfortable and secure experience. Many children with autism struggle with sensory sensitivities or physical discomfort in traditional car seats, making adaptive options vital for both safety and well-being.
The cost of an adaptive car seat can be significant, often ranging from $1,000 to $4,000, depending on the specific features and manufacturer. This makes them a financial challenge for many families, particularly those already managing the costs of therapies, treatments, and other support needs.
Your donation helps provide access to these essential car seats, ensuring that children with autism and special needs can travel safely and comfortably. By supporting the purchase of adaptive car seats, you’re directly impacting a child’s safety and quality of life.
Why Are Grants Needed for Therapies, Even if You Have Insurance?
Even with insurance, many families struggle to afford the therapies that children with autism and special needs require. High deductibles, limited coverage, and exclusions for certain therapies can create financial barriers, leaving families with significant out-of-pocket expenses. For example, many insurance plans may cover only a limited number of therapy sessions per year or exclude certain therapies, such as speech or occupational therapy, for children with autism.
For families without insurance, the cost of therapies can be even more overwhelming. Without the support of insurance coverage, families may be left to pay the full price for essential therapies, which can easily reach thousands of dollars annually. This can create a situation where the necessary care is out of reach for many families, furthering the challenges they face.
Grants for therapies are essential because they help bridge this financial gap. Whether a family has insurance or not, these grants provide access to the therapies and support that children need to thrive. By funding these services, we can ensure that every child, regardless of their financial situation, has access to the resources that can make a world of difference in their development and well-being.
Your donation helps fund these grants, ensuring that families get the support they need, when they need it most.
Why Are Grants Needed to Help Cover Travel Expenses for Families Seeking Services Outside of Yuma?
For many families in Yuma, Arizona, accessing essential services like diagnostic evaluations, specialized therapies, and expert care often requires traveling long distances to larger cities like Phoenix or San Diego—sometimes three hours or more away. Unfortunately, these services are not always available locally, and the cost of travel can add up quickly.
Traveling for medical and therapeutic appointments can be a significant financial burden for families, especially those already managing the costs of care. Gas, lodging, and food expenses can easily reach hundreds of dollars per trip, which may be difficult to afford, especially for families with limited income or multiple children in need of care.
Grants designed to cover these travel expenses help alleviate this financial strain, ensuring that families can access the critical services their children need without worrying about the cost of getting there. These grants can cover travel-related expenses like gas, lodging, and meals, enabling families to receive the care they deserve, regardless of their financial situation.
Your donation can help make this support possible, ensuring that every child, no matter where they live, has access to the resources and services they need to succeed.
Why is Scholarship Money Important for Local Yuma Residents Pursuing Careers in Therapy and Care for Children with Autism and Special Needs?
Access to skilled providers—such as ABA therapists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists—is a critical need for children with autism and special needs in Yuma. However, the shortage of local professionals in these fields can make it difficult for families to receive timely and consistent care. Many families are forced to travel long distances or face long waiting periods, which can delay vital therapies and impact a child’s development.
Scholarship funds are key to addressing this issue by enabling local residents to pursue education and training in these specialized fields. By providing financial support to individuals in Yuma who are interested in becoming therapists or care providers, we can help build a workforce that understands the unique needs of the community. Local scholarships create opportunities for residents to receive the necessary training without the burden of high tuition costs, making it possible for them to stay in the area and provide care where it is most needed.
This approach not only strengthens the local economy but also ensures greater access to quality care for children with autism and special needs. The more trained professionals we have in Yuma, the more families can access services right in their own community, reducing the need for long-distance travel and wait times. Ultimately, this leads to improved outcomes for children and a positive ripple effect in the community as a whole.

How Will Funds Be Distributed and When?
Funds will be distributed once we’ve reached a certain level of donations to ensure we can fully support the grants and scholarships we offer. The more donations we receive, the more we can provide to families and individuals in need.
Once donations have reached the required level as approved by the board of directors and bylaws, applications will be carefully reviewed by our board members. The board will determine funding based on the specific needs outlined in each application, and the percentage of funding allocated to different categories—such as therapy costs, travel expenses, and scholarships—will be based on the total amount of donations received.
We are committed to ensuring that the distribution of funds is done fairly and transparently, in a way that maximizes the impact of each donation. We’ll keep applicants informed every step of the way and ensure that all funds are used to directly benefit children and families in need.
